I pondered the phrase “show me the incentive and I’ll show you the human.” Trying to determine the base driver of human action I stumbled upon, while considering power being the base driver, the base human desire to inflict torture. It occurred to me that a human’s desire to inflict torture lies beneath the desire for power. That is, a human’s base desire is very likely to inflict torture on other living beings.
I know this is an uncomfortable truth, but I do believe this, after much pondering, to be true. After “holding a mirror” to my own self, I do believe this to be true. I believe this human’s base desire begins with oneself: a human begins by torturing their self before torturing others. It’s better to know the truth than to shy away from it. Once one knows the truth they can then determine the correct course of action (or inaction).
Thus, upon realizing my own innate drive, I’ve decided to change my base default programming, and choose a default settling to love all living beings instead. I intend to lead by example, starting with myself. I know it will take time to update, but it should be a productive update. And, dear reader, I invite you to join me in updating your base programming as well. We, as humans, always have the option to change our programing, and I invite you to do so.
